The Human Foundation Beneath our Affiliations
Before people become members of a party, an organization, or an economic category, they arrive in a condition of dependence. Someone must feed the child, recognize distress, and make room for a life that cannot yet sustain itself. Whatever differences later emerge, human existence begins through relationships that make survival possible. This dependence does not disappear entirely with adulthood. We may gain competence, wealth, or influence, but our lives remain connected to the work and care of others. Even the person who appears most independent relies on conditions that no individual creates alone.
To speak of a shared foundation is to recognize this underlying condition without pretending that everyone has the same experience. Hunger may be universal as a human possibility, while its daily presence is profoundly unequal. Everyone needs security, but one person can purchase distance from danger while another must pass through it to earn a living. A useful philosophy begins with common humanity and then pays attention to these differences. Shared vulnerability should increase our concern for unequal circumstances. It should never become a beautiful phrase that makes those circumstances disappear from view.
